Cross-pattern ranks from 134463 snapshots across 670 Binance USDT‑M futures markets — then open a dedicated pattern study for depth.

Abstract

This hub compares 24 chart-pattern families using 134,463 deduplicated detections across 670 Binance USD-M perpetual futures markets (15m, 1h, 4h, 1d; September 12, 2017 to July 31, 2026). Each detection is scored over the following 20 candles with mutually exclusive, volatility-normalized outcomes: the first ±1× NATR(14) threshold hit classifies the window as breakout or breakdown; neither hit is sideways (rates sum to 100%). Across 94 pattern–timeframe groups, pooled breakout was 49.22%, breakdown 45.26%, and sideways 5.52% (expected-direction hit 72.21%; both-cleared 38.24%), with a median 20-candle return of -0.056%. How to read this hub

This page compares pattern families side by side: who clears the expected direction more often, how outcomes differ by candle timeframe, and which study to open next. Fuel scores, feature bins, RSI/BTC segment lifts, and Spearman tables live on each pattern study — use the ranks below to pick one, then switch timeframes there.

Key results

Under a mutually exclusive first-threshold rule (±1.0× NATR within 20 candles), each snapshot is breakout, breakdown, or sideways — rates sum to 100%. Pooled rates set the baseline; the charts and tables below show how individual pattern families diverge from that baseline.

Key findings
  1. Pattern families are not interchangeable: expected-direction hit spans 26.52% (Ascending Triangle, n=362) to 84.03% (Triple Top, n=119) — a 57.5 percentage-point gap.
  2. Widest pattern×timeframe contrast (n≥200): Bearish Flag on 4h at 82.4% (n=1,631) versus Ascending Triangle on 1h at 25.85% (n=205) — 56.6 pp apart.
  3. Timeframe barely moves the needle: pooled hit ranges only 2.69 pp from 66.33% on 4h (n=22,681) to 69.02% on 15m (n=28,417). Choose a pattern family first; then open its study to pick an interval.
  4. Bearish-biased families average higher expected-direction hits in this sample (bearish 67.5% across 11 families vs bullish 66.2% across 10) — bias label and outcome are linked by construction, but the gap is still visible in the ranks.
  5. Mean excursion asymmetry also differs by family: MFE÷|MAE| runs from 0.329 (Triple Top) to 3.977 (Triple Bottom). Open a pattern study for timeframe-specific MFE/MAE and feature bins.

Expected-direction hit rate by pattern

Figure 1 ranks pattern families by expected-direction hit rate among groups with adequate sample size. The leading families in this snapshot — notably Triple Top at 84.03% and Bearish Flag at 80.63% — sit above the pooled hit rate of 72.21%, but ranks are sensitive to n and to bias labeling (bullish vs bearish expected direction). Outcomes by timeframe

Hit rates are broadly similar across candle timeframes: 15m leads at 69.02% (n=28,417) while 4h sits at 66.33% (n=22,681). The narrow band suggests that, under a horizon measured in candles rather than clock time, resolution propensity does not hinge on a single timeframe. Data source & universe

Source market: Binance USD-M Futures (perpetual contracts) (USDT-quoted perpetual contracts). OHLCV candles come from the Public Binance Futures kline (candlestick) API. Patterns were labeled offline with the ChartDatabase AdvancedPatternDetector (geometry + RSI divergence detectors; confidence/recency filters off during dataset build).

  • Universe: 670 unique symbols. Sample: 0GUSDT, 1000000BOBUSDT, 1000000MOGUSDT, 1000BONKUSDT, 1000BTTCUSDT, 1000CATUSDT, 1000CHEEMSUSDT, 1000FLOKIUSDT, 1000LUNCUSDT, 1000PEPEUSDT, 1000RATSUSDT, 1000SATSUSDT, … (670 total).
  • Timeframes: 15m, 1h, 4h, 1d.
  • Observation window: 2017-09-12T00:00:00Z → 2026-07-31T18:45:00Z (UTC).

Pattern end (snapshot candle)

Every statistic on these pages is measured from a single snapshot candle called pattern end: RSI, Fuel scores, BTC context, and the next-20-candle outcomes all start there. How that candle is chosen depends on the pattern family.

  • Trendline families (triangles, wedges, channels, flags, pennants): After the geometry first forms, the channel is walked forward candle by candle. The pattern stays valid while closes remain inside the projected support and resistance bands within ±0.5× NATR(14). Pattern end is the last candle that still respects that band (the tip candle is validated — the first close outside the band is not used as the snapshot). Breakout and breakdown are evaluated on confirmed candle closes over the 20-candle forward horizon.
  • Double top / double bottom: Pattern end is the first neckline re-touch after the second peak or trough, within a ±0.5× NATR(14) band around the neckline. Breakout requires clearing the neckline (+1.0× NATR); breakdown requires breaching the actual bottom trough support floor (or top peak resistance ceiling for double tops).
  • Triple top / triple bottom: Same structural logic after the third extreme: the first neckline revisit within ±0.5× NATR(14). Breakout/breakdown requires clearing the neckline or breaching the outer extreme support/resistance boundary floor/ceiling.
  • Head & shoulders / reverse head & shoulders: Pattern end is the neckline break confirmation bar (the candle that confirms the classic H&S or reverse-H&S completion). Forward outcomes evaluate continuation vs invalidation over the 20-candle window from the neckline anchor.
  • Cup & handle / inverted cup & handle: Pattern end is the handle completion: the first candle that touches the extended rim line within ±0.5× NATR(14) — “ready for breakout,” not a post-breakout bar. Outcomes evaluate 20 forward candles from the rim anchor.
  • RSI divergences: Pattern end is the second synchronized price extreme of the divergence pair (still inside the pattern; no later confirmation walk). Outcomes evaluate ±1.0× NATR(14) over the next 20 candles.

Headline outcome rates use the last snapshot per formation (pattern end). Live-condition bins (RSI, Fuel, BTC, position/age) use one snapshot per formation-age band. Geometry charts stay on the last snapshot. The next 20-candle wick window is measured from that snapshot close.

Sampling & construction

  • Dataset version: pattern_datasets_v11 · analysis version 4.
  • Construction: Sliding window size 200 candles, step 100 candles. One row per pattern at pattern_end_idx with 20 forward candles required.
  • Sample size: 662498 raw rows → 134463 after dedupe on symbol, timeframe, pattern_type, pattern_start_idx.
  • Label integrity: only OHLC path-derived outcomes are publishable; 0 legacy excursion-only rows were rejected.
  • Live snapshot weighting: one_snapshot_per_formation_age_band.
  • Pattern types: 24 families · 94 pattern×timeframe groups.
  • Features scored: 23 numeric columns.

Outcome definitions

Headline outcomes are mutually exclusive classes measured from the snapshot close at pattern end over the next 20 candles. Breakout + breakdown + sideways = 100%. Forming is not in that sample. On trendline families, age-balanced Fuel / RSI / point-in-time bins add Forming (still inside the lines) so four classes sum to 100%.

Exclusive class: upside clears +1× natr_14 within 20 candles before downside.
Exclusive class: downside clears −1× natr_14 within 20 candles before upside.
Pattern-end (terminal) unresolved class: neither +1× nor −1× natr_14 cleared within 20 candles after the breached candle. Headline KPIs, ranks, and geometry bins use this sample; Forming is not in that formula. Sideways is not a zero-move class; typical wick travel inside the bands is reported as ×NATR max-up / max-down.
Trendline families only, and only on non-terminal snapshots still inside the lines: neither side tagged within 20 candles. Age-balanced Fuel / RSI / point-in-time bins add Forming so four exclusive classes sum to 100%. Forming-only trees (live still-inside matches) use breakout + breakdown + forming = 100%.

Labels use ground-truth path outcomes (outcome_label / target_first_hit from full kline OHLC path). Trendline families evaluate confirmed candle closes against projected support/resistance bands. Unresolved non-terminal trendline snapshots are Forming; unresolved terminal snapshots are Sideways. Double/triple bottoms require breaking the bottom support floor for breakdown. Head & shoulders evaluate from neckline confirmation. Same-bar dual clears resolve via open proximity, then candle body polarity, then return sign. Pattern-end headline rates: breakout + breakdown + sideways = 100%. Forming+terminal Fuel/RSI bins: breakout + breakdown + sideways + forming = 100%.

Bullish-biased patterns use exclusive breakout as the expected-direction hit; bearish-biased patterns use exclusive breakdown. Both-cleared rate reports how often both ±1.0× NATR thresholds were reached before the exclusive label was assigned.

Statistical methods

Shared outcome definitions and sampling apply to every pattern study linked from this hub. Within-pattern Spearman associations, Fuel zones, feature bins, and RSI/BTC segment lifts are reported on each dedicated study page (not pooled here), so timeframes and pattern geometry stay comparable within one family. Associations use Spearman rank correlation with Benjamini–Hochberg FDR q-values; stars require q < 0.05 and |ρ| ≥ 0.05. Significance marks: * p < 0.05 · ** p < 0.01 · *** p < 0.001 . Minimum pairwise n for correlations: 30. natr_14 is excluded from breakout/breakdown correlations because it defines the threshold.

Out-of-sample check: chronological holdout. Training rows whose 20-candle label horizon crosses the holdout cutoff are removed. Reported validation includes probability error scores as well as hit rates.

Public research pages show Fuel volume/momentum scores, geometry, volume trend, momentum (RSI, BTC RSI when available), RSI-divergence geometry, and BTC mean distance. Fuel and RSI stay on fixed domain zones. geom_width and HS symmetry use mean±σ bands (below typical / typical / elevated / extreme). geom_height and extension use log then ±σ. Remaining numeric features stay on quartiles. Bins are never pooled across timeframes.

Symbols are Binance USD-M perpetual pairs (e.g. BTCUSDT). Breakout, breakdown, and sideways are mutually exclusive on pattern-end snapshots and sum to 100%. Forming is the still-inside class on non-terminal trendline snapshots (Fuel/RSI mixed bins add it as a fourth class). Multiple detections on the same coin over time are included after deduplication on formation start.

Limitations & disclosures

  1. This is a historical, in-sample statistical study — not a forward-tested trading strategy. It excludes exchange fees, funding rates, slippage, and execution timing, all of which affect real trading outcomes. A fixed temporal holdout split is reported in methodology for transparency; thresholds are not retuned on the holdout window.
  2. The dataset covers Binance USD-M perpetual futures only. Results may not generalize to spot markets, other exchanges, or lower-liquidity assets with different microstructure.
  3. Confidence and recency filters were switched off while building the dataset, so figures reflect the detector’s raw geometric/RSI trigger rate — not the filtered, higher-conviction signals surfaced live to subscribers.
  4. Exclusive breakout / breakdown / sideways labels use the first ±1.0× NATR threshold (or pattern-specific structural boundary) touched in candle order over the 20-candle forward horizon (target_first_hit / outcome_label). Trendline families evaluate confirmed candle closes against projected support/resistance bands. Double/triple bottoms require breaking the bottom support floor for breakdown. Head & shoulders evaluate from neckline confirmation. Same-bar dual clears resolve via open gap / nearer threshold from open, then candle body direction.
  5. Overlapping detections were deduplicated on formation start (longest span kept), but different pattern families can still fire on the same underlying move, so correlated market regimes (e.g. one broad rally) can inflate sample counts across several pattern types simultaneously.

Glossary

Bull flag / bullish flag
Common search names for the bullish flag chart pattern: a sharp advance (the pole) followed by a downward-sloping or rectangular consolidation. See the Bullish Flag pattern study for breakout statistics.
Head and shoulders pattern
A three-peak reversal pattern (left shoulder, head, right shoulder) with a neckline. Traders search this as “head and shoulders crypto” as well as the full name. See the Head and Shoulders study for exclusive breakdown rates.
Falling wedge bullish
A common query for the falling wedge: converging down-sloping trendlines often treated as a bullish continuation or reversal. See the Falling Wedge study.
Cup and handle pattern
A rounded-bottom continuation pattern with a shallow handle. Also searched as “cup and handle crypto”. See the Cup and Handle study for breakout rates.
Fuel gauge zones
Fixed partitions of Fuel component scores: Dead Water (0.00–0.33), Organic Flow (0.34–0.66), and The Powder Keg (0.67–1.00). Used for Fuel volume/momentum outcome charts on research pages.
NATR(14) & Formation Avg NATR
Normalized Average True Range over 14 periods — average candle range as a percentage of price. In this research, formation average NATR (natr_pattern_avg) is measured across the full pattern span to size breakout/breakdown thresholds (1.0× NATR) relative to market volatility rather than fixed percentages.

Breakout / breakdown / sideways
Mutually exclusive outcome classes over the 20-candle forward horizon. Headline KPIs, ranks, and pattern-end geometry bins use breakout, breakdown, and sideways (sum to 100%). Breakout means the +1.0× NATR(14) upside threshold (or resistance trendline/neckline) is touched first; breakdown is the downside class; sideways on those samples means the pattern-end candle already tagged a line but neither ±1.0× NATR printed in the next 20 candles. Sideways is not a zero-move class: typical inside-band wick travel is the sideways ×NATR max-up / max-down. Trendline families evaluate confirmed candle closes.

Forming (trendline still inside)
Fourth exclusive class on trendline families (triangles, wedges, channels, flags, pennants) for snapshots that are not the last candle of the formation: price is still between the lines and neither side tagged in the next 20 candles. Age-balanced Fuel / RSI / point-in-time bins report breakout + breakdown + sideways + forming = 100%. Forming-only trees (live still-inside matches) use breakout + breakdown + forming = 100%. Non-trendline patterns have forming_rate 0.

Both-cleared rate
Share of windows where both +1.0× and −1.0× NATR thresholds were cleared within the 20-candle forward horizon before the exclusive label was assigned. High both-cleared rates indicate volatile two-sided windows.
Expected-direction hit rate
For patterns with a directional bias (e.g. bullish patterns expect a breakout, bearish patterns expect a breakdown), this is the exclusive-class rate for that expected side only. Neutral patterns report breakout and breakdown separately.
Spearman ρ (rho)
A rank correlation coefficient between −1 and 1 that measures monotonic association without assuming a linear relationship or normal distribution — appropriate for skewed, fat-tailed return data. Tables emphasize pattern geometry, momentum, and BTC-context features.
p-value, q-value & significance stars
Two-sided Spearman p-values are adjusted with Benjamini–Hochberg FDR (q-values). Stars require q < 0.05 and |ρ| ≥ 0.05 so large-n micro correlations are not marked significant. Always read stars with effect size.
Wilson 95% CI
Outcome rate fields ending in _ci95 are Wilson score intervals for the binomial point estimate. They quantify sampling uncertainty on rates, not trading risk or costs.
Null baseline / temporal holdout
Null baseline shuffles exclusive outcomes within each timeframe to show a chance expected-direction hit band. Temporal holdout compares rates before vs on/after a fixed cutoff (thresholds not retuned on holdout).
MFE / MAE
Maximum Favorable Excursion and Maximum Adverse Excursion — the best and worst price movement recorded within the forward horizon, expressed as a percentage of the snapshot close. MFE÷|MAE| summarizes average upside versus downside excursion magnitude.

Timeframe-specific feature bins
On each pattern study, feature distributions are computed separately for 15m, 1h, 4h, and 1d. Use the timeframe control to switch; never treat pooled multi-TF histograms as interchangeable because candle horizons differ.
Feature quartile bins
Numeric features that are not Fuel, RSI, or σ-banded (e.g. slopes, current_scale_number, btc_dist14_mean) are split into quartiles. Each bin reports exclusive breakout, breakdown, and sideways rates plus mean MFE.
Feature typical / elevated bands
geom_width and head-and-shoulders symmetry use mean ± σ bands computed separately per pattern and timeframe: below typical (< μ−σ), typical (μ±σ), elevated (μ+σ to μ+2σ), and extreme (> μ+2σ). Pattern height and extension age use the same labels after a log1p transform so right-tailed size features are not dominated by outliers. Bins are never pooled across timeframes.
Pattern end (snapshot candle)
The single candle where features (RSI, Fuel, BTC context) and the forward 20-candle outcome window are measured. Trendline families use the last close still inside ±0.5× NATR of the projected channel; doubles/triples use a neckline re-touch within ±0.5× NATR; H&S uses the neckline break; cup & handle uses the rim touch after the handle; RSI divergences use the second price extreme. BTC regime (btc_dist14_median)
Terciles of BTC last-14 median distance at the live snapshot (btc_weak / btc_mid / btc_strong). Used as a simple proxy for BTC-relative market regime when slicing outcome rates (not in correlation ranks).
